I’d like to introduce Shogakukan’s “A Yankee Meets Destiny with His Oshi”!
Below is a quote from the back cover. This post includes impressions and a review that touch on the story! If you just want a quick idea of what it’s about, I’d be happy if you read only the red text and highlighted parts.
For the first time in my life, I found myself having a male idol as my oshi.
Takumi Tenma (天馬 拓), an apathetic and cool-headed delinquent, attends a live concert as an escort for his younger sister—where he has a fateful encounter with the male idol RUI, the group’s cool-visual member.
As Takumi finds himself living a life completely colored by RUI, an unexpected miracle begins to unfold…!?
From Shogakukan’s “A Yankee Meets Destiny with His Oshi”
The long-awaited release as a collected volume!! A full-color work that became a hot topic on X (formerly Twitter)!!
I happened to come across Hirose’s work on my timeline, and I was completely amazed by how beautiful it was—especially as a full-color manga. When I later found out that it was being released as a collected volume, I remember feeling even more excited.
Even around me, questions like “Who’s your favorite idol?” are common conversation starters, but I feel that the word “oshi” itself only came into use relatively recently. It has since become firmly established as a term used for things you love—people, hobbies, or entertainers you feel compelled to support (^^).
The title is very easy to understand and makes the book easy to pick up, and the cute and beautiful use of color is also one of my favorite points of this work…!! Next, I’d like to dive into the story itself and talk more about it!
The “Light BL” Genre That’s Easy to Pick Up
Most of the works I’ve introduced on this blog so far lean toward what you might call “full-on, classic BL,” with fairly detailed depictions. In contrast, this title doesn’t go that far in terms of explicitness. Because of that, I think it fits well into the “light BL” genre and is especially easy to read for those who aren’t fond of very intense content, as well as for people trying BL for the first time.
The story begins with the protagonist, Tenma, accompanying his younger sister to a live concert in place of her friend, who was originally supposed to go with her. At first, he isn’t enthusiastic at all—after all, an idol, and a male idol at that…? But once he actually experiences the live performance for himself…
A wave of relatability hits hard in the scene where he’s completely struck by the idol.
When it comes to places where you go to support idols, live concerts are the first thing that come to mind. Since it’s hard to convey your feelings directly with words, things like message fans made to communicate emotions visually appear throughout the story, creating many moments that fans who have supported idols can relate to—those “it’s a lot of work, but it’s fun” feelings. Especially during the live scenes, you’ll feel like you’re being completely struck through the page (true story) (laugh).
Watching Tenma completely fall for his very first idol oshi, RUI, made me feel as if I were seeing a reflection of myself (^^)
The Sense of Distance as His Connection with His Oshi Gradually Grows
The process of Tenma starting to follow RUI unfolds through a series of short scenes, making it very easy to follow and understand. Even in these brief moments, the level of detailed artwork is incredible, so you never get bored while reading. It’s just too wonderful. From the striking eyelashes to the gap created by the yankee-style way of speaking, every character is so charming that it’s simply fun to read (^^)
He eventually starts going to live concerts with his junior tagging along, and the story is full of surprising developments, including an unexpected encounter with RUI. From there, it becomes clear that there is a connection between Tenma and RUI that traces back to their past.
As the distance between them grows closer and past memories begin to intertwine, you can’t help but wonder what will happen next—it’s impossible to look away. I truly hope you’ll read it for yourself and enjoy supporting oshi activities together while admiring the stunning artwork that only full color can offer (^^)
