What Is BL?

▶This blog uses the term “BL,” which is an abbreviation for “Boys’ Love,” a genre that focuses on romantic relationships between men.

For those who may be wondering, “What exactly is Boys’ Love?”, this page will briefly and clearly explain what kinds of stories fall under the BL genre.

This is an explanation and interpretation on this blog only, and may not necessarily apply to content published on other websites.

As the term suggests, “BL” refers to manga, illustrations, novels, and drama CDs that focus on romantic relationships between men. (Personally, I first encountered BL through fan works, but I’ll leave that out for this time.)

I personally feel that same-sex romance has been spreading in recent years through media adaptations, anime, and voice actors sharing their works on social media, but there are still many people who are unfamiliar with it. The culture of enjoying it quietly remains deeply rooted. To be honest, I fully understand the desire to avoid being seen by family or having friends find out (the term “fujoshi” refers to women who enjoy BL, with “fu” symbolizing an affection for same-sex romance). Until you become independent or get your own living space, it can be quite difficult to freely own or collect BL works.

However, I also feel that the rise of e-books has greatly increased opportunities to encounter BL more easily. Even without owning physical copies, being able to read them online in digital form really makes me feel how much the times have changed.

Through this blog, I want to share my wish that “people will come to know the beauty and preciousness of BL that I’ve experienced for many years”. By immersing yourself in the unique interactions found only between men—the scenery, settings, and personalities—and reading them carefully, I hope this can become a wonderful form of content that soothes the efforts of everyday life, allowing readers to feel empathy and a gentle sense of warmth (^^).
